American speedskating coach Bart Veldkamp breaks leg skiing
KEARNS, Utah - U.S. speedskating coach Bart Veldkamp is recovering from surgery after breaking his leg while skiing.
U.S. Speedskating said the surgery was performed by Eric Heiden, who won five speedskating gold medals at the 1980 Olympics and is now an orthopedic surgeon.
U.S. Speedskating spokeswoman Peri Kinder had no other details on Veldkamp's accident.
The 41-year-old Veldkamp represented both the Netherlands and Belgium at three Winter Olympics. Skating for the Dutch, he won gold in the 10,000 metres at the 1992 Albertville Games and took bronze in the same event two years later at Lillehammer. After switching to the Belgium team, he claimed bronze in the 5,000 at Nagano in 1998.
Veldkamp is the national coach for the U.S. all-around team.
