Charles Rogers' suspension would prevent Bombers signing
Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones may soon be en route to Winnipeg to join the Blue Bombers but another troubled former National Football League star’s return to the game may get caught up in paperwork.
Former first-round draft pick Charles Rogers remains under suspension by the NFL and, as a result, cannot sign with any Canadian Football League club until he applies for reinstatement. He was issued a one-year suspension in 2007 but, although he is currently a free agent and working on returning to the game, has yet to fill out the proper paperwork to get back on the field.
Rogers’ CFL rights belong to the Bombers.
The CFL has a policy that honours NFL suspensions and a league spokesperson told the Free Press Wednesday that Rogers remains ‘indefinitely suspended’ down south. The former Michigan State star was arrested in September 2008 and charged with assault and battery of the mother of four of his seven children, but charges were later dropped. Last December he was sentenced to attend sobriety court or face jail-time after violating his probation and in March was jailed for violating probation.
Meanwhile, the CFL confirmed the Bombers position on the Jones signing, saying no contract had yet been filed with the league office. It’s believed the club is now working to make sure Jones has the proper documentation to cross the border and play in Canada.
