Doer shows Jets, Bombers pride in Washington

WASHINGTON — Canada's Ambassador to the United States is wearing his Winnipeg pride in a big way this week.
Gary Doer, the former Manitoba premier, had his Winnipeg Jets jersey and a Winnipeg Blue Bombers tie in play at the Canadian embassy today when he invited Winnipeg reporters and media types for a visit.
"I hope the old adage that good defence beats offence every day of the week, I hope that carries through," Doer said, predicting the Bombers would win Sunday's Grey Cup over the B.C. Lions.
He was also getting ready to take in tonight's Jets game at the Verizon Center against the Washington Capitals, proud of the way the NHL team bounced back with three wins at home last week.
"There was a lot of coverage about the Capitals visiting Winnipeg last week in the media here in Washington and it was pretty good for the home team last week with the three home wins," Doer said. "And it was a lot of fun watching it."
Now in an important diplomatic position, Doer’s schedule doesn’t always permit him to watch his favourite NHL team.
"I would say I’ve watched a third of (games) but I’m like everybody else in Winnipeg, I have a share of a season ticket in Winnipeg and my daughters are going to quite enjoy them until I get back but when I get back, they’re not going to enjoy them so much," he laughed.
