Five Bisons named Canada West football all-stars
Five members of the University of Manitoba Bisons football team, the most since the 2007 Vanier Cup championship, were named Canada West conference all-stars on Wednesday.
Rookies Anthony Coombs and Nic Demski were selected at the running back position and on special teams respectively, fourth-year Thomas Hall was named at linebacker, fourth-year Teague Sherman was selected at safety and fifth-year Pete Adams was named at halfback.
Coombs, 19, rushed for 640 yards and led Canada West with 1,203 all-purpose yards. Demski tied a CIS record with two kickoff return touchdowns in a season and was second overall in Canada West with 348 kick return yards.
Hall, 21, received his first all-star selection after he recorded 35 total tackles, two sacks and interceptions, three break-ups and one fumble recovery. Sherman, 23, was also a first-time conference all-star as he had 25.5 total tackles, one interception and four break-ups. Adams, 25, is a three-time Canada West all-star to cap his last CIS season. His 37 total tackles were third best on the Bisons while he led his team and conference with seven break-ups along with two interceptions.
"I am really proud of the five Bison players receiving conference recognition and happy that two rookies received this honour in their first year," said Bisons head coach Brian Dobie in a statement. "It is an honour for Pete to finish his fifth and final season at Manitoba with his third straight season as conference all-star."
