Former Bomber president Robinson dies

Winnipeg businessman and former Blue Bomber president Bruce Robinson died Sunday night in an Edmonton hospital, the Canadian Football League club confirmed Monday. He was 65.

Robinson’s family was with him in the Alberta capital, where he had been flown by air ambulance last month.

The affable fourth-generation owner of the Robinson lighting business -- which traced its history to founder Thomas Robinson, a chandler and candle maker in mid 19th Century Montreal -- also inherited a life-long genetic disorder which proved fatal.

He was reportedly taken off life support about a week before he died.

Robinson graduated in 1969 from the University of Manitoba with a political science degree and four years later he and brother Ross acquired B.A. Robinson, the company their father established here in 1936.

He served as Bomber president for two years, starting in 1992, but only resigned from the board last spring.
