Howard wins $100,000 BDO Canadian Classic Open
Martin jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first end and looked to be at the top of his game. But a series of uncharacteristic misses by Martin and third John Morris put Howard in control, holding hammer and a 5-4 lead heading into the seventh end.
And that’s when Howard proved that sometimes you have to be lucky and good. With Martin counting two on the four-foot, Howard was looking only to cut Martin down to one and head home for the final end, all tied up.
But Howard got lucky with the final rock of the seventh end as his stone grazed the top Martin counter and then deflected off into the second stone, spilling both and leaving Howard with a decisive three-ender when the dust settled.
Martin stretched his palms upward and shook his head, while Howard could only laugh as he watched from centre ice.
Martin conceded the game after that.
"I tried to just miss the top one and get the back one," said Howard. "It was fortunate obviously. I did not try to make that double."
