London 2012 Olympic Stadium bridge put in place
LONDON - The framework for the first of five huge bridges connecting the 547-million-pound (C$992 million) Olympic Stadium for the London 2012 Games was lifted into place Wednesday.
The steel beams stretching over the water surrounding the stadium on three sides are 41 metres long.
The 80,000-seat arena will become a 25,000-seat permanent venue after the Olympics, with the new 11-metre wide bridge also set to be a permanent addition to the east London site.
The five stadium bridges are among 30 being constructed at the Olympic Park, which is crisscrossed by the River Lea and its tributaries. The Lea flows into the Thames.
"The site of the Olympic Park is made up of fragmented pockets of land and in the past has suffered from poor connections between local communities," Olympic Delivery Authority chief executive David Higgins said. "The structures, bridges and highways project is the single biggest construction project the ODA is delivering and will create new connections across the site and leave an open and accessible area in legacy."
