Moose trade Murray, lose Lukowich

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Moose made one transaction and were stiffed by another on AHL roster-freeze day.
Centre Marty Murray, 35, was traded to the Milwaukee Admirals for left-winger Peter Olvecky, 24. It’s a deal that is officially termed a "loan."
The Moose also found out today that veteran defenceman Brad Lukowich, who has spent part of the season with the NHL parent Vancouver Canucks, won’t be joining them for the rest of the season.
Lukowich, making $1.5 million this season, was waived by the Canucks and assigned to the Moose last week, but has come down with a sudden shoulder injury that will require surgery, leaving the Moose out one veteran blueliner.
The submitted their final 22-man roster this afternoon to the AHL, but unlike the NHL, where there is intense attention and plenty of sense of occasion on deadline day, the AHL doesn’t permit any discussion of final rosters until sometime on Thursday.
It’s likely, though, that forward Dan Sexton, with Anaheim, and defenceman Nolan Baumgartner, with Vancouver, were paper assigned and then recalled on Wedesday so they could be on Manitoba’s final list of players eligible for the rest of the season and playoffs.
Murray, from Brandon, had 30 points in 59 games for the Moose. Olvecky, a 24-year-old native Tencin, Slovakia, was a third-round draft pick of Minnesota in 2004.
Earlier today, the AHL suspended Moose forward Sergei Shirokov for one game — that will be Friday’s home test against Rockford — for kneeing Grand Rapids defenceman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen on Saturday night. Shirokov received a tripping penalty on the third-period play.
