NHL greats help inner-city kids take to the ice
NHL stars old and new will be at the Garden City Shopping Centre on Saturday to help support an equipment and fundraising drive for the North End Hockey Program (NEHP).
Jets great Anders Hedberg and the St. Louis Blues’ Alex Steen, son of former Jet Thomas Steen, will be at the mall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. signing autographs and encouraging support for the NEHP, an initiative that aims to help 115 inner-city youth get involved with hockey by organizing teams and providing equipment, ice time, coaching and transportation to and from games.
The program’s organizers are seeking donations of hockey equipment or cash (tax receipts available).
Equipment donations can also be made on an ongoing basis at:
- Gateway Recreation Centre (1717 Gateway Rd.),
- River Heights Community Centre (1370 Grosvenor Ave.), or
- Allard Arena (80 Allard Ave.).
The program is a joint effort between the Ndinawe and Ma Mawi community support groups, the North End Community Renewal Corporation, and the Winnipeg Police Service.
