Oudenaarden sets new personal best at long-track speedskating competition
CALGARY - Canadian Tamara Oudenaarden set a personal best time with a third-place finish in the women's 500-metres on the final day of the Intact Finale speedskating competition Sunday.
Oudenaarden, of St. Albert, Alta., finished in 38.83 seconds, 0.3 faster than her previous record of 38.86 set Saturday. She finished behind Sayuri Osuga of Japan (38.36) in first and Thysje Oenema of the Netherlands (38.64).
"I am so excited to be finished the season, I am excited for rest and recovery," said Oudenaarden.
Because she set a new best time, Oudenaarden shares $10,000 in prize money with teammates Shannon Rempel of Winnipeg and Nicole Garrido of Edmonton, who both set new times earlier in the competition.
The prize money, provided by Impact Insurance, was available to any member of Canada's national speedskating team that set a personal best during the event.
In the men's 500, Jamie Gregg of Edmonton won for the second day in a row. Gregg also set a new personal best in 34.77 seconds.
Gregg wasn't eligible for a share of the prize money because he is not a member of Canada's national team.
Michel Mulder of the Netherlands was second while Skio Ohta of Japan finished third.
Scott Bickerton of Nelson, B.C., was named the top Canadian of the competition while Pim Cazemier of the Netherlands, was named the top international athlete. Bickerton set three personal best times in the 5,000, 3,000 and 1,500 metres and Cazemier skated an unofficial junior world record in the 3,000.
