REGINA — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will now turn to their bullpen — again — for relief help from quarterback Steven Jyles.

This time, however, it looks like he could be at the controls for awhile.

The Bombers lost starting quarterback Buck Pierce to an dislocated right elbow inside the final three minutes of Sunday’s 27-23 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

It marks the third time this season the veteran pivot has been forced to leave the game and the injury came after he was hit by Rider defensive end Brent Hawkins and had his elbow land on Luc Mullinder’s helmet.

Jyles stepped in late and completed all four of his pass attempts for 43 yards and a late TD strike to Adarius Bowman.

"It’s unfortunate because you never want to see a teammate get hurt like that," said Jyles. "This is a big opportunity for me and I’ve got to take advantage of it.

"I won’t come out and put more pressure on myself than needed. I’ll work on taking care of the little things. I spent the bye week thinking about the things I need to improve on and I thought I did a pretty good job of working on that throughout the week during practice.

"I’m ready to go."

Pierce entered the game with the second-best QB-efficiency rating in the CFL to Montreal’s Anthony Calvillo, but threw one interception and fumbled once in the loss while completing 21 of 29 passes for 243 yards. He is now 1-4 as a starter in Bomber colours.

Jyles, who had the third-best rating in the CFL, is 1-3 in games he has started and has the respect and confidence of his teammates.

"We all believe in Jyles," said left tackle Brendon LaBatte. "We know we can with him."

"That feels great knowing that," said Jyles. "I’ve worked hard at earning that since training camp. You have to have the faith in your team and when guys believe in you and know that you can lead, it plays a big part in your success.

"The guys do have faith in me. All I can try to do now is try not to let them down."
