Saskatoon Hilltops silence Rifles
WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Rifles dropped a 48-28 decision to the Saskatoon Hilltops at Canad Inns Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Already locked into a playoff date with the Hilltops in the Prairie Football Conference, Winnipeg (3-4) has one more game left before they’ll travel to Saskatoon (7-0) for a semifinal game Oct. 16.
For the second time this season, the Rifles managed to hang with the first-place Hilltops. A one yard touchdown run from fullback Devin Cox and touchdown catches from receivers Alex Vitt (11-yards) and Kurt Goodrich (33-yards) kept the home side close at halftime.
Vitt found his second major of the game on a 25-yard reception to cut the deficit to 32-28 with 4:32 left in the quarter, but Saskatoon slotback John Trumpy dashed any hopes of a Winnipeg comeback, when he hauled in an 80-yard touchdown reception.
Trumpy had three touchdowns and 180 yards on the day.
The Hilltops beat the Rifles 45-33 earlier this season.
Winnipeg wraps up the regular season in Calgary next weekend.
