Stanley Cup headed to Domain
Ken Dryden making a special trip
The Stanley Cup is going to Domain on Friday, courtesy of NHL Hall of Famer Ken Dryden.
Dryden and the Cup will arrive at the Domain Arena at 5:30 p.m., where it’s expected to be greeted by a sold-out crowd of 700 people.
This is believed to be the first time the Stanley Cup has gone on the road with a former Stanley Cup winner. It’s become tradition now that players on the Cup-winning team get to take the Cup with them the following summer to share with family and friends. But Dryden won his six Cups with Montreal before that tradition became established. However, he recently asked the Hockey Hall of Fame if they would open the tradition to players from the earlier era and this summer it agreed.
A spokesman for Dryden said he’s taking the Stanley Cup to Domain because that’s where his father was born and raised and he has cousins who still live and farm in the area.
"This is just so exciting for the community and the local hockey families," Christine Brigg, a volunteer with the Domain recreation board, said. "When we first heard, we were, ‘really, the Stanley Cup is coming here ... is it the real Stanley Cup."
Brigg said about 150 people live in Domain and about 400 residents in the surrounding community. The night will double as a fund-raiser for the Arena and it sold out — 700 tickets — in four days, she said.
Accompanying Dryden will be his brother Dave — who played for Chicago, Buffalo and Edmonton — and sister Judy.
