WINNIPEG - Defenceman Mathieu Schneider’s knee injury has grown into something major, the Manitoba Moose revealed today.

Moose coach Scott Arniel said this morning that the veteran NHL defenceman -- assigned here by the Vancouver Canucks late last month -- will have surgery today to repair a torn meniscus and will be out of action four to six weeks.

That’s a lot longer than the one to two weeks the team was saying last week, when Schneider "tweaked" his knee in a rut on the ice in Worcester, Mass.

Schneider has played eight games for the Moose and scored three goals and five points.

Also missing from practice this morning at the MTS Centre was forward Dan Sexton, assigned here by the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

Sexton, who played five games for the team in November, hasn’t arrived in Winnipeg yet but is expected for Wednesday’s practice.

The Moose also announced this morning that they have released 23-year-old Chad Painchaud from his tryout contract. The right-winger, who played two games after being brought in last week, will return to Victoria of the ECHL.

The Moose, who have lost seven of their last eight, play at MTS Centre Friday and Saturday night against San Antonio.
