Tina Bachmann of Germany wins World Cup biathlon sprint
KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia - Tina Bachmann of Germany claimed her first career biathlon World Cup victory Thursday by winning the women's 7.5-kilometre sprint, and World Cup leader Helena Jonsson secured the overall sprint title.
The 22-year-old Bachmann, who made her World Cup debut in Trondheim, Norway, last week, shot clean and finished in 20 minutes 49.8 seconds. Her teammate Simone Hauswald also hit all targets but was 3.7 seconds behind for second. Anna Carin Olofsson-Zidek of Sweden came in third, 19.3 seconds behind the winner, for her first podium this season.
Jonsson missed two targets at the first shooting range and finished a distant 19th - but still secured the sprint title with 372 points from 10 races. Defending World Cup champion Magdalena Neuner of Germany was second with 358, followed by Tora Berger of Norway with 352.
With only two races left, Jonsson leads the overall standings with 904 points, after winning four races and getting another five podium finishes this season. Germany's Kati Wilhelm is second, 11 points behind. Neuner has 832 for third.
Men's and women's pursuit races are scheduled for Saturday, and mass start events will wrap up the season on Sunday.
