KAMLOOPS, B.C. -- Winnipeg's Kerry Burtnyk continues to stuggle at the Strauss Canada Cup of Curling here.
This morning Manitoba's representative at the Tim Horton's Brier that opens March 8 in Winnipeg was trounced 9-2 in six ends by Randy Furbey's rink from Edmonton. It left Burtnyk with a record of four losses and no wins.
Burtnyk is back on the ice tonight at 8 p.m. Winnipeg time when he will play Reid Carruthers rink. Carruthers, who is the fifth on Burtnyk's Brier squad, is not here this weekend and his spot is being taken by Charlie Thomas of Calgary. The team is sitting at 1-3 heading into action tonight. Also on tonight draw Jeff Stoughton (2-2) of Winnipeg takes on Kevin Martin of Alberta, who dropped to 1-3 after losing this morning to Kevin Koe of Edmonton.
Jennifer Jones, coming off a huge win at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts national women's championship in Regina last week, also plays tonight sporting a record of 3-1, after she lost to Cheryl Bernard of Calgary on Thursday. Jones takes on Cathy King.
Bernard is 4-0, alone atop Pool A of the round-robin with Jones second at 3-1.
Kelly Scott of Kelowna and Shannon Kleibrink of Calary, both of whom competed at the Scottie, are tied atop Pool B at 3-1.
On the men's side, Koe is alone atop Pool A with a 3-0 record and making people forget about the five teams here headed for the Tim Hortons Brier in Winnipeg next week.
"We always fly under the radar a bit. It's just the way it is, being from Alberta, right?" said Koe, pointing to well-known Edmonton skips Martin and Ferbey.
"We're a good team, but we're not the top team from there. But most of the guys out here know us and I don't think we're surprising too many teams when we're playing them anymore."
Glenn Howard (4-0) of Coldwater, Ont., and Brad Gushue (3-1) of St. John's, N.L., lead Pool B.
