Carey knocks off B.C. to climb to 2-1

MONTREAL, Que. – After an "emotionally exhausting" morning win against fearsome Saskatchewan skip Stefanie Lawton, Manitoba’s Chelsea Carey dug herself out of an afternoon hole against B.C. rookie Kesa Van Osch to start a win streak at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

With the 7-6 win over Van Osch, Carey and her crew – third Kristy McDonald, second Kristen Foster and lead Lindsay Titheridge – rise to 2-1 in the tournament standings, with eight games yet to play in the round robin. But the 22-year-old Van Osch didn’t hand it to them easy.

"This game was a battle," Carey said, after wielding the hammer in the tenth end for a single and the win. "We sort of didn’t really wake up until about the eighth end. This morning’s game was emotionally exhausting, so we didn’t do a good enough job of recovering from that. We were really sloppy early for the first five or six ends."

After falling into a 5-3 hole through seven ends, the Manitobans orchestrated a triple in the eighth to take a 6-5 lead. They stuck Team B.C. to just a single point in the ninth, then carried the hammer into the final end of the tied game. Though Van Osch pushed to steal, Carey was able to make a final throw to win.

At 2-1, Team Manitoba now sits tied with Team Alberta, skipped by Val Sweeting, Newfoundland’s Heather Strong and Lawton in the standings, with defending Canadian champion Rachel Homan the only undefeated skip at 3-0. Rounding out the field are Nova Scotia’s Heather Smith, New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford and 20-year-old Yukon rookie Sarah Koltun all at 1-1.

Team Ontario’s Allison Flaxey — a former Manitoban junior champion — won her first game against Strong on Sunday afternoon to rise to 1-2, while Prince Edward Island’s Kim Dolan was winless after two games and Quebec’s Allison Ross was still looking for her first victory after three matches.
