Doering's squad top seed at Canola Junior Championship

Defending champion Kyle Doering and his West Kildonan squad will have a large target on their backs when the 2013 Canola Junior Championships open this week at the Brandon Curling Club.

Of course, they knew that going in long ago. But on Monday CurlManitoba made it even more official when Doering’s team was named the top seed heading into the event.

Doering represented Manitoba at the nationals a year ago and came home with a bronze medal. Rounding out the Junior Men’s Top 5 seeds are Matt Dunstone, also of West Kildonan, Pembina’s Daniel Birchard, Cole Peters of West St. Paul and Springfield’s Tanner Lott.

Two St. Vital rinks are ranked 1-2 on the junior women’s side, with Selena Kaatz and her crew ranked first and Shannon Birchard second.

Alyssa Vandepoele and Beth Peterson, both of Victoria Curling Club, are the third and fourth seeds while Rachel Burtnyk of Assiniboine Memorial is the fifth seed.

Round-robin play begins January 3rd in Brandon with the finals scheduled for Jan. 7th. The two winners will advance to represent Manitoba at the 2013 Canadian Junior Championships in Fort McMurray, Alta., from February 2-10th.
