Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey will have to run the table the rest of the weekend if she’s going to win the final of the $60,000 Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Womens Curling on Monday.
Carey got thumped 7-2 by Winnipeg’s Michelle Montford in a B-side game at Fort Rouge Curling Club Saturday afternoon, dropping the Carey foursome to the C-side and leaving them needing to win the rest of their games if they’re going to capture the richest women’s bonspiel in Manitoba.
Montford, meantime, advances to play former world champion Bingyu Wang of China in a B-side game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
In other games of local interest on the noon draw Saturday, Winnipeg’s Janet Harvey lost her first game of the event, dropping to the B-side after an 8-5 loss to former Canadian champion Amber Holland of Regina; Calgary’s Crystal Webster -- with Winnipeg’s Cathy Overton-Clapham at third -- dropped to the C-side with an 8-1 loss to reigning world women’s champion Eve Muirhead of Scotland; and former Manitoba women’s champion Barb Spencer won her B-side game 7-6 in an extra end over former Canadian junior champion Breanne Meakin 7-6. Spencer will play Muirhead at 6 p.m..
Earlier Saturday, Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones defeated Saskatoon’s Trish Paulsen 5-3 to advance to an A-side qualifying game Saturday at 6 p.m. against Edmonton’s Valerie Sweeting.
Sweeting advanced with her third win in a row Saturday morning, defeating Switzerland’s Michelle Jaggi 4-3.
Saturday evening’s other A-side qualifier will see Russia’s Anna Sidorova play against Holland.
