Jones beats BC rival

KINGSTON, ONT. -- Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones made short work of an old rival at the Canadian women’s curling championship Sunday morning, dropping BC’s Kelly Scott 10-4 to improve to 2-0.

Leading 3-2, Jones drew the four-foot with the final rock of the fifth end to score 3 and open up a 6-2 lead heading into the break. The two teams shook hands after nine ends.

The win has Manitoba in a four-way tie for first place heading into this afternoon’s draw. Canada’s Heather Nedohin, Ontario’s Rachel Homan and Saskatchewan’s Jill Shumay also won Sunday morning to improve to 2-0. Nedohin defeated Nova Scotia’s Mary-Anne Arsenault 7-6; Homan dumped Alberta’s Kristie Moore 9-5; and Shumay hammered Quebec’s Allison Ross 12-5.

Jones returns to the ice here this afternoon when she will take on Newfoundland’s Stacie Devereaux (0-2).

Jones and Scott -- a native of Winnipeg -- have a long history at this event, one that has historically benefitted the latter. Scott defeated Jones in the final of the 2006 Scotties Tournament of Hearts and the semifinal of the 2007 national championship. Scott also defeated Jones in the 1 vs 2 game at this event last year.

The BC foursome this year is three-quarters made up of Manitobans. In addition to Scott, longtime second Sasha Carter hails originally from Ashern. And the team has also added a third native Manitoban to the squad this year -- lead Sarah Wazney.

Wazney won a pair of Manitoba curling titles in 2008, taking down a provincial and Canadian junior championship that year as lead for Kaitlyn Lawes -- Jones’s current third -- as well as a Manitoba mixed title as lead for Reid Carruthers, Jeff Stoughton’s current second.
