STONEWALL -- Michelle Montford grew up idolizing Jennifer Jones, but she’d never played against her until here at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Friday afternoon.
And then she promptly beat her.
For the first time this week, Jones was on the losing end of the scoreboard on the 12:15 p.m. draw today, giving up a 4-ender to Montford in the seventh end and then missing both her draws in the tenth end to fall 7-5.
The victory was monumental for the 24-year-old Montford -- and not just because it came at the expense of one her curling idols. With the victory, Montford improved to 4-1 while Jones fell to 4-1 and the two teams are now tied for second place in their round-robin pool with just two more draws to come.
"That was huge," gushed Montford. "I mean, there’s not a lot of people who have beaten Jennifer Jones. It’s pretty exciting."
"They played quite well and I missed one bad shot in seven," said Jones. "If I don’t do that -- we gave up four there -- it’s probably a different game."
Only the top two teams in each round-robin pool advance to Saturday night’s playoff round.
Barb Spencer is now in the driver’s seat for one of those playoff berths after an 11-9 victory over Janet Harvey (3-2) kept her team undefeated at 5-0. Spencer and Jones meet on the late draw Friday evening.
In other games on the 12:15 p.m. draw, Kate Cameron’s Stonewall foursome stayed alive at 3-2 with an 11-6 win over Brandon’s Liza Park (0-5) while La Salle’s Deb McCreanor moved to 1-4 with a an 8-3 win over Thompson’s Charlene Norquay (0-5).
The Scotties reumes on the 4 p.m. draw when Chelsea Carey (4-1) plays Cathy Overton-Clapham (2-3); Colleen Kilgallen (5-0) can wrap up first place with a win over Stacey Fordyce (1-4); Karen Fallis (3-2) plays Lisa Menard (0-5); and Darcy Robertson (3-2) plays Jill Thurston (2-3).
