Kitchener to host curling pre-trials

The Canadian Curling Association announced Wednesday that Kitchener, Ont. will host the 2013 Capital One Pre-Trials, at which the final four teams will be determined for the 2013 Canadian Curling Trials at MTS Centre.

The "last chance" pre-trials event -- to be held Nov. 5-10, 2013 at Kitchener’s 6,000-seat Memorial Auditorium -- will feature 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams competing for the final four berths into the Winnipeg Trials, where Canada’s men’s and women’s curling representatives for the 2014 Winter Olympics will be determined.

Eight men’s and eight women’s teams will compete at MTS Centre Dec. 1-8, 2013 to become Canada’s Olympic representatives, but 12 of those 16 teams will have already been determined by the time the pre-trials event is held in Kitchener.

To date, only Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg and Kevin Martin of Edmonton have qualified for the Winnipeg Trials. Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen is currently leading the points race to capture the second men’s Trials berth this winter, but he will need to win the final event of the season -- this month’s Players Championship in Summerside, PEI -- and get a lot of help if Ontario’s Glenn Howard leap-frogs him in the points race this weekend with a win at the Men’s World Curling Championship in Basel, Switzerland.

The race to capture the second women’s Trials berth is currently being led by reigning Canadian champion Heather Nedohin of Alberta, followed by Ontario’s Sherry Midaaugh. Winnipeg’s Cathy Overton-Clapham is in third place in that race but will need to win the women’s Players Championship and get a lot of help to have any chance to earn the Trials berth.
