There are new up’n’coming curling champions in Manitoba, as the provincial Canola Junior Championships wrapped on Tuesday afternoon with Team Braden Calvert claiming the men's title and Team Meagan Brezden winning the women’s final.
Calvert, who curls out of Deer Lodge, soared past defending champion Matt Dunstone, pulling off multiple steals to win the game 6-1. The Calvert rink, which includes third Kyle Kurz, second Lucas Van Den Bosch and lead Brendan Wilson, earned its way to the final after beating St. Vital Curling Club skip Cole Peters in the semifinal.
In the women’s game, Meagan Brezden blazed past Kristy Watling 8-2 to claim the championship. The outcome was guaranteed to produce a new champion, as Watling had earlier knocked defending champion Shannon Birchard out of the playoffs. The Brezden foursome, which is based out of Granite Curling Club, also includes third Abby Ackland, second Danielle Lafleur and lead Nikki Boulet. They had earned a bye to the final after ousting Meagan Grenkow in the first round of the playoffs.
Now, Calvert and Brezden will prepare their teams to represent Manitoba at the 2014 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior championships in Liverpool, N.S. next month.
