Teams advance to curling playoffs in Neepawa

NEEPAWA — Rob Fowler, Scott Ramsay, Steen Sigurdson and Dennis Bohn are the final four playoff qualifiers here at the 2013 Safeway men’s curling championship.

The four teams advanced to Friday night’s playoff round with victories in B-side qualifying games here on the 4 p.m. draw: Ramsay defeated Dave Elias 12-5, Fowler beat David Kraichy 8-7, Bohn beat Scott Madams 10-8 and in the biggest upset so far here this week, 20th seed Steen Sigurdson stunned fourth seed Willie Lyburn 7-6.

The four losing teams are now eliminated while the winners advance to play the four A-side qualifying teams on the opening draw of the playoffs tonight at 7:45 p.m..

Fowler -- the defending champion -- plays Mike McEwen in a replay of last year’s provincial men’s final; the 23-year-old Sigurdson, who’s been battling the flu today, plays 49-year-old nine-time Manitoba men’s champion Jeff Stoughton; Bohn -- the 2008 provincial finalist -- plays Sean Grassie; and Ramsay plays reigning Manitoba mixed champion Terry McNamee.
