MORRIS -- The name is the same, only different.
More than four decades after the Ernie Boushy foursome laid claim to the title of winningest mixed curling team in Manitoba history, the Boushy family -- if not technically the Boushy name -- were once again curling for a Canadian Mixed curling championship at the Morris Curling Club this week.
B.C. skip Tom Buchy is related to Ernie Boushy -- his father and Boushy are cousins -- but Buchy is descended from a wing of the family that has always spelled their surname differently.
"I never really did get the whole story on that," Buchy says, adding there's also a slight pronunciation difference between the two wings of the family. The Buchys pronounce the name 'Bush-y' while the Boushys pronounce it 'Boo-shy.'
"But we've met and kept in touch by email and things like that," Buchy said of Boushy. "And he's come to watch us in the past. From what I understand, he was a hell of a mixed curler in his day."
Was he ever. Boushy -- supported by third Ina Light, second Garry DeBlonde and leads Bea MacKenzie and Betty Hird -- won four straight Manitoba mixed titles curling out of Heather Curling Club between 1964-67. Boushy also has the distinction of winning the first ever Canadian Mixed title in 1964, as well as another national mixed championship two years later.
All these years later and a couple of thousand kilometres up the road in Kimberley B.C., Buchy is carrying on the family legacy in mixed curling.
Buchy -- supported by wife Lori Buchy at third, second Dave Toffolo and lead Robyn Toffolo -- won a B.C. mixed title in 2006 and went on to finish fourth at the Canadian Mixed that year.
They were hoping to improve on that performance this year here in Boushy's backyard, but it's been a disappointing week. The B.C. team limps into their final round-robin draw this morning with a 4-6 record and no chance of making the playoffs.
"The team's played well," says Buchy, "but I've struggled. I really lost my feel for a while there and it's taken some time to get that confidence back."
