Doering, Birchard sitting pretty at Canadian juniors
THE playoff picture is beginning to take shape at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior curling championships in Napanee, Ont.
On the men's side, Manitoba's Kyle Doering and Alberta's Brendan Bottcher will both be able to clinch playoff berths on Thursday. They will each head into the penultimate day of the round robin with 8-1 records.
The women's picture is slightly more clouded, with Manitoba's Shannon Birchard, Alberta's Jocelyn Peterman and British Columbia's Kesa Van Osch all tied for first at 7-2 through 15 draws.
The top team in both the men's and women's events earn byes to the finals, while the second- and third-place teams qualify for the semifinals.
Doering controls his destiny having beaten Bottcher on Tuesday. The Manitoba skip won both his games on Wednesday, first digging himself out of an early 3-0 hole against Saskatchewan's Brady Scharback to win 7-5, then scoring one in an extra end to beat Nova Scotia's Stuart Thompson 6-5.
Thompson and Northern Ontario's Brennan Wark are tied for the final playoff spot at 6-3, a half-game up on Thomas Scoffin of Yukon.
Doering plays Asselin (5-4) and British Columbia's Josh Hozack (1-8) today. Bottcher will face Daniel Murray of the Northwest Territories (2-7) and Scoffin.
Peterman, who had won six straight on the women's side to open the event, lost her second straight on Wednesday morning. Peterman rebounded in the afternoon draw with a 9-4 win over Quebec's Roxane Perron.
Van Osch split her two games on Wednesday, first beating Jennifer Armstrong of New Brunswick 10-2, but then dropped a 6-4 decision to Ontario's Jamie Sinclair.
Birchard scored three in the first against Saskatchewan's Kristen Streifel and went on to win 7-4. Then had a trey and three deuces in a 10-5 win over Nova Scotia's Emily Dwyer.
Birchard and Van Osch are set to meet in today's late draw.
