Family affair put on hold

Stoughton quartet missed deadline

  • Print

JEFF STOUGHTON almost put together a Dream Team of sorts for this week's MCA Bonspiel.

The winningest skip in Manitoba history, Stoughton explained his regular men's team -- which already has a berth into next month's Manitoba men's curling championship in Beausejour -- decided not to compete in this week's MCA Bonspiel.

And so Stoughton decided to form a second team just for this week that would have been an all-Stoughton affair with his 83-year-old father Jack, 18-year-old son Riley and 16-year-old son Cole.

So what happened? "My dad throws with a stick now so we figured he could play lead and call the game and the rest of us would mix it up," Stoughton said Friday. "So I called the MCA to enter and I was too late -- I'd missed the (entry) deadline. It was my own fault."

All of which not only deprived local curling fans of seeing three generations of Stoughtons in action on the ice at once, it would also have provided the even rarer sight of Jeff Stoughton sweeping a rock.
