McEwen gains measure of revenge on Fowler
DEFENDING Manitoba men's champion Rob Fowler found himself on the bad end of a rematch on Saturday with last year's other provincial finalist, Mike McEwen of Winnipeg.
Fowler got the better of McEwen last year in the provincial championship title game, but this time McEwen had the last laugh, downing Fowler 6-4 in an A-side semifinal in the 2012 Canad Inns Prairie Classic at the Portage Curling Club at Portage la Prairie.
Fowler was sent to the B-side of the triple-knockout event.
A total of 32 teams started out in the four-day Prairie Classic, which will wrap up Monday with the final at 6 p.m.
The event carries a $58,000 total prize purse with $18,000 for the champion.
Fowler's 2012 provincial title, won last February at Dauphin, was the first Manitoba men's curling championship for a Brandon-based team since 1987 when Fowler's father, Brian Fowler, led the provincial men's champion team.
"There isn't really any added pressure (as provincial champion). There's so many great teams in this event that we can use the experience to hopefully build more success," said Fowler.
The Canad Inns Prairie Classic is the third World Curling Tour event that Team Fowler has competed in so far this season.
"We've had a bit of a slow start, we didn't qualify in the first two, so we're working hard to perform better here in Portage," Fowler said.
The two A-side qualifiers were to be decided late Saturday with Jeff Stoughton vs. McEwen in one and Brad Gushue playing William Lyburn in the other.
The two B-side qualifiers will be decided today at 5 p.m. followed at 8:30 p.m. with the four C-side qualifiers.
