Ontario's Howard Rajala suffers first defeat at men's Canadian senior curling

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - Nova Scotia's Alan O'Leary upset previously undefeated Howard Rajala of Ontario 9-1 at the Canadian senior men's curling championship Tuesday.

O'Leary took one with the hammer in the first end, then stole three points in both the second and fourth ends for a 7-0 lead they would not relinquish.

Rajala dropped to 5-1 while O'Leary joins a large group of teams tied for third place at 4-2.

New Brunswick's Wayne Tallon pulled into a first-place tie with Rajala after a 9-3 win over Newfoundland's Glenn Goss (2-4).

Alberta's Wade White is part of the group tied at 4-2 after winning 9-7 over winless Glen Hudy of the Northwest Territories.

On the women's side, Manitoba's Lois Fowler inched closer to Nova Scotia in the race to first place by crushing Ann McKellar-Gillis of the Northwest Territories 13-6. The Brandon skip is alone in second place at 5-1. The Yellowknife quartet drop to 2-4.

Saskatchewan's Cathy Inglis won her third straight, 15-3 over still winless Nola Murphy of the host province. That evens Inglis' record at 3-3.

Northern Ontario's Vicky Barrett had her playoff hopes dashed by losing to B.C.'s Karen Lepine 9-8. Lepine left the ice earlier in the game after suffering a broken left wrist prior to the opening draw.

Lorraine Jeffries took over as skip and improved B.C. to 2-4, while Barrett dropped to 3-3.
