Fonseca to serve as interim coach for upcoming Canadian men's soccer camp
TORONTO - Interim head coach Tony Fonseca will lead Canada into a pair of men's soccer friendlies in Doha, Qatar later this month.
Canada will face Japan on March 22 and Belarus on March 25 as it prepares for this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.
Fonseca, the technical director for the Canadian Soccer Association, is the latest to fill in while the CSA looks for a permanent replacement for former coach Stephen Hart.
Colin Miller took over head coaching duties during Canada's camp in January.
A former assistant with the men's national team, Fonseca was hired as the CSA's technical director in November when the organization cleaned house after Canada failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
Canada crashed out of qualifying with disastrous 8-1 loss to Honduras in Hart's last game as coach.
Fonseca's 21-man roster includes 15 returning players who took part in the World Cup qualifying bid but missed the team's January camp. One notable exception is D.C. United star midfielder/forward Dwayne De Rosario, who is set to begin his Major League Soccer campaign after serving a two-game suspension for violent conduct in a pre-season game.
The roster also features a couple of new faces. Goalkeeper Tomer Chencinksi, who currently plays in Israel, and midfielder Stefan Cebara who plays in Slovenia, will attend a national camp for the first time.
Fonseca recalled Samuel Piette to the senior team after the 18-year-old midfielder recently took part in the CONCACAF under-20 championship, where Canada was knocked out in the quarter-finals after a 4-2 loss to the United States.
"This camp represents an opportunity to reintegrate our European-based players as we take on two very difficult opponents in Japan and Belarus," Fonseca said.
"These two matches will be an important platform for our continued preparations for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup and beyond."
