Big-play receiver Bryant signs for 2 years with Argos

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- Ricky Ray has another big-play receiver at his disposal.

The Toronto Argonauts signed veteran receiver Romby Bryant on Tuesday to a deal that will take him through the 2014 season.

"It's rare to find a veteran receiver that is as gifted and versatile as Romby Bryant," Argos general manager Jim Barker said in a statement.

"His willingness to contribute in all phases of the game rubs off on the rest of the locker-room, which makes your whole team better."

Bryant had 183 catches for 2,477 yards and 22 touchdowns the last three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. Bryant, who is entering his sixth CFL season, has 295 career receptions for 4,428 yards and 31 TDs.

His arrival gives veteran quarterback Ray another playmaker.

Toronto's Chad Owens was the CFL's leading receiver for the 2012 Grey Cup champions with 94 catches for 1,328 yards and six TDs en route to being named the league's outstanding player.

Esks extend star catcher Stamps

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Eskimos signed all-star slotback Fred Stamps to a contract extension Tuesday.

The deal will keep Stamps under contract with Edmonton through the 2014 season.

Stamps finished second in CFL receiving last season with 70 catches for 1,310 yards and nine TDs.

The six-year veteran has surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving plateau four straight years and been named a league all-star each time.

Perrett staying on Alouettes' 0-line

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Alouettes kept a key member of their offensive line off the CFL free-agent market, which opens Friday, by signing Jeff Perrett to a three-year contract Tuesday.

The 6-7 Perrett has been with the Alouettes since he broke into the CFL in 2007.

The Lethbridge, Alta., native, who missed four games in 2012 with a hyperextended left knee, was a starter on an offensive line that allowed only 30 sacks, tied for the lowest in the league. They helped three different starting running backs average five yards per carry.

General manager Jim Popp said in a statement the signing "allows us to go into camp with our offensive line intact from one year ago.

"Jeff brings a massive, imposing figure to the right tackle position and is a very difficult player to get around to get to the quarterback."

Popp also announced that running back Jerome Messam has passed his physical exam, which makes official his acquisition last week from the Edmonton Eskimos for a sixth round draft pick.
