Bombers QB Pierce 'out a long time' with elbow injury: coach

WINNIPEG – The news is not good for Buck Pierce and Winnipeg football fans.
The Bombers starting quarterback suffered a dislocated right elbow and "will be out a while," head coach Paul LaPolice told reporters at a media briefing today.
The 28-year-old Pierce suffered the injury when he landed awkwardly on the helmet of a Saskatchewan Roughriders defender with just under three minutes to play in Sunday’s 27-23 loss to the Riders at Mosaic Stadium.
LaPolice did not say if Pierce, who had his arm in a sling today, is lost for the season.
"We’re not sure yet, we’ll have a little bit more information later in the week," said the coach, who spoke with Pierce for 15 minutes at the Bombers offices this morning. "He’s disappointed that it happened again."
LaPolice wouldn’t say if the quarterback would be destined for the nine-game injured list. That decision will be made later this week.
"He may even go on the nine-game and you can pull him off," LaPolice said. "We’ll talk as a staff, we’ll talk with (Bombers GM Joe Mack), and see what he wants to do.
"(Pierce) will be out a while… he’s out a long time."
The Bombers, now 2-7 and losers of five straight games, will go with Steven Jyles for the coming weeks, with Alex Brink and Joey Elliott serving as his back-ups. Jyles is 1-3 as a starter this season.
Pierce has already missed a good chunk of time with a strained right knee this year, and has only started four games for Winnipeg (completing just two of those). In his last 27 CFL starts, the former B.C. Lions QB has left the game 10 times due to injury.
Winnipeg returns to the practice field Wednesday.
