Bombers head to Banjo Bowl without OT Taormina
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be without starting offensive tackle Jordan Taormina when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders in this Sunday’s Banjo Bowl at Canad Inns Stadium.
Bombers head coach Tim Burke said Friday afternoon following the club’s final full practice this week that Taormina -- who hasn’t practised all week -- continues to suffer symptoms from a pinched nerve and will not be available on Sunday.
Shannon Boatman will be activated from the practice squad to replace Taormina, Burke said.
"Taormina will be out. His symptoms are remaining so we’ll just wait until next week to see how he feels. Hopefully, he’ll be ready for Calgary," Burke said.
The Bombers play in Calgary against the Stampeders on Sept. 14.
On the upside, Burke said starting offensive guard Steve Morley -- who has a sore ankle and also hasn’t practiced this week -- will play on Sunday.
Boatman started five games at tackle for the Toronto Argonauts in 2010, but was cut in training camp in 2011 and will be making his first appearance in a CFL game in two years. And he will be doing it against a pretty good Saskatchewan front four that includes former Bombers rush end Odell Willis and Brent Hawkins, who have combined for seven sacks this season.
"I’m feeling pretty good," Boatman said after a chilly and abbreviated practice at Canad Inns Stadium. "I’m a little nervous -- it’s been awhile since I played. But all I can really do is go out and give my best effort."
Burke said he’s comfortable with Boatman sliding into the starting role. "I’m good with him. He’s a veteran of the league, he’s played in this league. He’s been around long enough to know our system, so I feel good about it."
