Bombers lose Suber, Stewart

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers injury list continues to lengthen, with word this afternoon that starting DB Alex Suber and starting LB Brandon Stewart are definitely out of the lineup for this Friday’s game in Edmonton against the Eskimos.

Suber and Stewart were injured Friday night in Montreal in a 41-30 Bombers loss to the Alouettes and now join an already long list of starters on the sidelines.

In addition to Stewart and Suber, Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice confirmed Monday afternoon that LB Marcellus Bowman, SB Cory Watson, RB Anthony Woodson and DE Kenny Mainor will also definitely be out on Friday.

Tackle Andre Douglas had a helmet on and practiced for part of Monday morning, but LaPolice said he is questionable to return by Friday.

"We’ll see how he feels," said LaPolice. "I’m not super-enthused about it but at least he’s starting to run. We’ll see how he is tomorrow."

LaPolice said RB Chad Simpson is doubtful for Friday.

Third-string QB Joey Elliott also didn’t practice Monday, but had an excused absence for personal reasons.

Stewart is being replaced at strong-side linebacker by DB Jonathan Hefney -- who days he’s OK with the move -- and Suber is being replaced by Darrell Pasco.

Hefney is being replaced at half-back by Johnny Sears, who is in turn being replaced at cornerback by Deon Beasley.

LaPolice was asked about the impact of all the injuries. "It’s our job to get them in a position to be ready and to keep playing. We have talented players here - we have to put them in a position to win and find a way to win."

The Bombers returned to the practice field Monday morning for the first time since the loss in Montreal dropped their season record to 0-2. The club plays this Friday in Edmonton and then July 18 in Toronto against the Argos to wrap up a set of four road games to open the 2012 season.
