A pair of all-star defensive ends, a legendary head coach and a team builder are this year’s inductees into the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Hall of Fame.

The Bombers announced Wednesday morning that Tony Norman, Jim Heighton, Dave Ritchie and Bill Morton will be honored Oct. 22 at the club’s annual Legacy Dinner at Canad Inns Polo Park. Ritchie, who as Bombers head coach from 1999 to 2004, guided the club to four playoff appearances and a 52-44-1 record, was asked via conference call if he was surprised it took the Bombers so long to induct him.

"If I was there personally, I’d probably say some things," Ritchie laughed. "You know what — I’m so happy to be in it... I had a lot of things happen to me when I was in Winnipeg: my mom and dad died in the same month in September ’99; I had a four-way bypass.

"Hey, how do you say it? I’m just glad to be alive."

Norman, who played for the Bombers from 1980 to ’86, had 59 sacks in his career, three West Division all-star honours and was a member of the 1984 Grey Cup-winning team. He was also named to the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Heighton, who played from 1970 to ’78, played 141 games for the Bombers and was a West Division all-star in 1972 and 1974.

Morton was a Bombers board member, the driving force behind the creation of the club’s hall of fame in 1984 and the team’s unofficial club historian.
