Bombers pick Fitzgerald, Pavlopoulos

  • Print

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have inked two of their talent haul from this year’s CFL draft, signing receiver Carl Fitzgerald and punter Billy Pavlopoulos.

Fitzgerald (6-5, 240, Saint Mary’s) was drafted in the third round (20th overall) last week after finishing second on the Huskies in receiving last season with 14 receptions for 184 yards and one touchdown. Fitzgerald had 28 catches for 435 yards and three TDs in three years at St. Mary’s and the Bombers like his upside as a tight end/fullback.

Pavlopoulos (6-3, 200, British Columbia) was selected in the seventh round (54th overall) and finished the 2011 season averaging 43 yards per punt – second-best in the country – after punting 70 while converting 13 of 19 field-goal attempts. In January 2012 he tested positive for the steroid stanozolol and received a two-year suspension from the CIS.
