Bombers will 'stay the course' with GM Mack, despite calls for firing
Joe Mack is going to be the general manager and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as presently constituted are pretty much going to be the team through the 2012 CFL season.
Bombers board chairman Bill Watchorn said Tuesday afternoon that Mack retains the full confidence of the board after a 52-0 shellacking by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina on Sunday and fans should not expect any changes in the GM chair this season.
"Our position is we stay the course," said Watchorn, adding Mack’s status will only be reviewed at season’s end as part of the club’s regular annual reviews.
Asked if that means Mack will be the GM regardless of what happens through the final nine games of the 2012 season, Watchorn had a one-word answer: "Yes."
The club again didn't make Mack available to the media on Tuesday but Watchorn said Mack will face the media at some point this week and answer the questions about his performance directly.
"He will face this head-on," said Watchorn. "As he should."
Meanwhile, Bombers head coach Tim Burke also met with the media on Tuesday afternoon and said fans expecting a massive personnel overhaul of the Bombers given their now 2-7 record will be disappointed.
"You can't change at this time of the year. If you bring guys in, they have to learn the CFL game, they have to learn how to play in the system. And by the time you do that, it’s three or four weeks down the line.
"We’re going to win with the guys we have and we’re going to go as hard as we can go."
And that includes with QB Joey Elliott. Burke said injured quarterback Buck Pierce will practise this week, but he’s still not healthy enough to play in Sunday’s Banjo Bowl rematch against the Roughriders at CanadInns Stadium.
As a result, Burke said Elliott -- who started the last three games for the Bombers -- will once again start this Sunday.
