Brink to start for Bombers in final game at old stadium

Alex Brink will start at quarterback for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday against the Montreal Alouettes at 2 p.m. in the team's final Canadian Football League team at Canad Inns Stadium.

"Brink will start, Justin Goltz will play and RJ Archer is the third quarterback," said Bombers head coach Tim Burke after Tuesday's practice at the stadium.

Injured players Buck Pierce (shoulder) and Joey Elliott (knee) will not play.

Brink has a 1-2 record this season as the Bombers' starting quarterback and has had five career starts. His last start was Aug. 3 in a 36-26 loss to Montreal.

"The thing with Alex is a little more accuracy with his throws and quicker decision-making, which I think you'll see that. I think Alex has really progressed in that area. Early in the year, he was a little bit slow in his decision-making. He knows where to go with the ball. It was just not happening as fast as he'd like it to."

In his three starts earlier this season, Brink went 60-of-111 for 790 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. Though Brink had seemed to be improving -- the team was just 1-5 at the time -- Pierce was injured, so the Bombers went to Elliott after that.

Burke said Demond Washington will be able to play Saturday and will play the strong-side (SAM) linebacker position, where he practiced on Tuesday.

New starters offence will include receivers Doug Pierce and Wallace Miles, who will come off the practice roster, and running back Carl Volny.

He said defensive linemen Bryant Turner and Kenny Mainor will practice on Wednesday and will be evaluated.
