Eight Bombers named to East Division All-Star Team

Eight members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were named to 2011 East Division All-Star Team, the CFL announced Thursday.
The Bombers, who had more all-stars than any other East division club, had a strong showing on the defensive side of the ball with five players -- defensive linemen Doug Brown and Odell Willis; defensive backs Jovon Johnson, Jonathan Hefney and Ian Logan -- named to the squad.
Receiver Terrence Edwards, and offensive linemen Brendon LaBatte and Glenn January were also recognized for their efforts in helping Winnipeg claim a first place finish in the East Division.
"It's nice to be recognized as a contributing member of a defence that's done some pretty good things this year," Brown said after a light workout at the Winnipeg Indoor Soccer Complex at the University of Manitoba. "It's importent to remember that we're a defence by committee. Guys like (Bryant Turner, Jason Vega and Don Oramasionwu), those guys need their props for the work they did this year."
It's the eighth time Brown has been named a divisional all-star, while Johnson, Edwards and LaBatte earn their third nomination. Hefney has been selected to the division all-star team twice; Willis, January, and Logan earn their first all-star selection.
It's been a long-time coming for Logan, who had four interceptions in his sixth CFL season.
"You can't always go from stats," he said. "I had four picks in '09 but I felt like I had a much better overall this year. The reads are a lot easier, having seen the same quarterbacks the past couple years you (can) expect things. Playing with this type of crew around me -- the (defensive backs) we have here are the best I've ever played with.
It makes it easy to make plays."
The Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts had seven all-stars each; the Hamilton Tiger-Cats had five players named to the East squad. The division all-stars were selected by 70 voters, including members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC), head coaches and fans from across the country.
In other Bombers news, it looks like non-import backup safety Brady Browne is an option for the East Final, which goes against either Montreal or Hamilton Nov. 20 at Canad Inns Stadium. Brown, who suffered a torn bicep early in the season, has been practising and could be ready to return, head coach Paul LaPolice said.
LaPolice also said that the club is looking at moving LaBatte back to guard and Obby Khan back into the centre spot on the offensive line next week (Chris Greaves would return to his backup role). That decision will come after the coaches explore different line scenarios over the weekend.
Next up for the Bombers: Four days off. The entire team won't get back on the field until Tuesday.
