Elliott wins CFL player of the week award for taming Ticats
Defensive end Alex Hall wins award for forcing fumbles
The good news for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers keeps on coming.
The club was informed this morning that quarterback Joey Elliott and defensive end Alex Hall were selected as Gibson’s Finest CFL players of the week.
Elliott was named the offensive star, on the strength of his 33-of-43 for 406 yards and one touchdown outing in Winnipeg’s 32-25 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Canad Inns Stadium last Thursday. The third-year pivot, making just his third career start, became the first Bombers quarterback to throw for 400-plus yards since Michael Bishop hit the mark during the 2009 season.
Hall, a first-year CFL player, recorded one sack and forced Ticats quarterback Henry Burris to fumble the football twice in the contest – one of them coming at the Bombers' one-yard line in the first quarter. Hall has four sacks on the year, tying him for third in the league.
Hamilton kick returner Chris Williams was named the special teams player of the week, while B.C. Lions safety Cauchy Muamba picked up Canadian player honours.
The last-place Bombers (2-5) host the first-place Lions (5-2) Friday night (7 p.m.).
