Buddy Tinsley, who played 11 seasons for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and was team captain when they won back-to-back Grey Cups in the late 1950s, died Wednesday after a long illness.

He was 88.

Tinsley, a native of Texas who starred as a lineman at Baylor University, played one season, 1949, for the Los Angeles Dons of the AAFC.

The AAFC disbanded after the 1949 season, and Tinsley went to the CFL., before joining the Canadian Football League Bombers from 1950 to 1960, including eight seasons playing as a two-tackle.

"He never left the field," his son Jack Tinsley said in announcing his father's passing.

After retiring, big Buddy never left Winnipeg, either.

He made his home here.

The memorial service will be held next Thursday at 7 p. m. at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre at 3030 Notre Dame Avenue.
