Right tackle Douglas lost for season: Bombers

The injury woes for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue: Import right tackle Andre Douglas will have surgery on his left ankle and will be lost for the season.
The third-year lineman, who was brought back to the club as a free agent this winter, will go under the knife on Aug. 13, head coach Paul LaPolice told reporters after practice at Canad Inns Stadium Monday.
Douglas hasn’t played a game this year after dealing with a hip injury through most of training camp and the first four weeks of the season, but was slated to return to his starting position last week.
Unfortunately, the young lineman turned an ankle during practice and was held out of Thursday’s 23-22 win over Edmonton. After getting checked out, the player and club were informed of their options regarding the ankle late last week.
"He had a flare up on his ankle," LaPolice explained. "He’s got a (tendon) that keeps moving back and forth and it’s going to have to be surgically repaired, so he’ll be done for the year."
The Bombers added Douglas to the nine-game injured list Monday.
It’s difficult to say if Winnipeg will miss Douglas, as the club hasn’t had him this year and his replacement, Jordan Taormina, hasn't really missed a beat in his place.
Taormina, a rookie, had a slow start getting used to the speed of the CFL game, but has looked more comfortable as each game passes.
In other Bombers news:
- Linebacker Marcellus Bowman practised Monday and should be in the lineup when the club hosts the Montreal Alouettes Friday night. He’s been out since the start of training camp with a hamstring issue.
- Safety Ian Logan (lower body), linebacker Brandon Stewart (lower body) and defensive back Alex Suber (lower body) have already been ruled out for the Als game. Same with running back Carl Volny (hamstring), who will be held back until after the bye-week, the team says.
- Defensive back Johnny Sears, running back Chad Simpson and receiver Chris Matthews all sat out Monday to heal up various bumps and bruises. They should be back on Tuesday, LaPolice said. Defensive back Jeremy McGee (hamstring) also missed Monday’s workout, but the club his hopeful he can play through the injury this week.
- Defensive tackle Brandon Collier and defensive end Kenny Mainor were both in pads and full participants at practice, but no time line was given for their return.
- The club has sold over 27,000 tickets for Friday’s game (7:30 p.m.).
