While Bombers defensive tackle Bryant Turner is still recovering from the sprained chest ligaments that left him struggling to breathe during the game in Montreal last week, a new honour should ease the pain.
Today the CFL announced that Turner has been named the league's defensive player of the week after that monster game in Montreal, which saw him wreak three sacks against Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo.
It's the first time Turner has earned a CFL player of the week award, but the player — who said he's feeling much better after the injury — doesn't plan to let it go to his head.
"I started off with three sacks last year and I didn't find my groove for a while, so I think I'm not going to say that (I've found my groove) this year," Turner joked with the media, after watching his teammates practice thiz morning.
Turner is unlikely to play in Saturday's game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Guelph, Ont. In his place, Marquis Frazier — who was released in pre-season, then brought back to the practice roster — will likely get a chance to show his game.
Other wounded Bombers sitting out of today's practice included receiver Terrence Edwards, who is week-to-week with a shoulder injury. Bombers head coach Tim Burke said he expects Edwards will take at least another week to recover.
Meanwhile, defensive back Johnny Sears is getting closer to a return. Sears even suggested he could return to the field this week but stay off special teams as he finishes his recovery, but Bombers coaches chose to hold him out until he's ready to go in both phases of the game, Burke said.
Other than Edwards and Turner, Burke said he expects all of last week's starters to be back in their places when the first kick flies in Guelph.
