Big Blue 50-50 draws boost amateur football

ALL those 50-50 draws at Winnipeg Blue Bombers home games in 2012 added up to a windfall of $127,500 for amateur football in this province, the Bombers announced Friday.

With their latest cheque to Football Manitoba, the Bombers say the club's 50-50 draws have now generated a total of $1.2 million for amateur football since 2002.

"Our 50-50 program is very successful at our home games and the generosity of fans does not go unnoticed," club CEO Garth Buchko said in a statement.

Ron East, executive director of Football Manitoba, said the money is used to provide financial support to its member organizations.

Philion joins Argos' staff

TORONTO -- Ed Philion is back in the CFL.

The veteran defensive lineman joined the Toronto Argonauts as a defensive line coach Friday. The CFL club also hired Eddie Brown as its defensive backs coach.

Philion appeared in 127 career games with the Montreal Alouettes, and was a four-time CFL all-star. He played in five Grey Cup games, winning in 2002. Before joining the Alouettes in '99, Philion spent time with the NFL's Buffalo Bills.

Philion played for Argos defensive co-ordinator Chris Jones in Montreal from 2002 to '06 and later served as a guest coach with Calgary in 2010 when Jones was with the Stampeders.

Brown joins the Argos after spending six years as a coach at Grand Valley State University. He played 13 seasons in the Arena Football League as a defensive back-receiver, winning three Arena Bowl championships with the Tampa Bay Storm (1991, '93 and '95).
