There is a lot of chatter out there about the Bombers needing to make a change at wide receiver following Adarius Bowman’s two jaw-dropping drops in the 17-13 loss to Toronto Sunday. Both those drops – two more bobbles on his lengthy list of knockdowns – were put to him right on the money, so trying to find any excuse regarding a bad throw or a tough body position, or anything like that, is a poor argument.

No real tears or anger from Bomberland in wake of Jesse Lumsden’s decision to sign with the Calgary Stampeders – that announcement likely to come on the weekend after Friday’s Stamps-Roughriders game.

...To wait a bit longer before making his decision.

It’s all over Twitter tonight that the Calgary Stampeders are now interested in Jesse Lumsden. Maybe the Edmonton Eskimos now, too, with new GM Eric Tillman at the helm.

Canadian Football League headquarters just spit out its Players of the Week press release and, despite their dominant 31-2 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, no Winnipeg Blue Bombers were honoured.

In today’s Free Press , Eazy-E (Ed Tait) and I look back at the first nine games of the season and make bold predictions for the second half of the schedule. The three from my end were the ones that made the cut. Here are five others that wound up on the cutting room floor (or whatever the electronic word processing garbage dump equivalent would be):

The Bombers didn’t provide a timetable for Buck Pierce and his dislocated right elbow but from the sounds of it, it’s going to be a month-to-month proposition. It’s an injury that requires a significant amount of rest before the joint can be used in the way it was prior to ‘popping out,’ so the quarterback’s season could be done. Here are a couple instances where athletes have suffered a similar injury:

It seems like an eternity since the Bombers last played – 17 days to be exact since the loss in Montreal – so it’s finally time for them to get back to work.

First off, a mea culpa.

Some thoughts about the Bomb Squad as I glance up periodically to the TV, watching the hometown Minneapolis broadcaster gush about Brett Favre (who’s not dressed) while Vikings QB Tavaris Jackson stinks it up out there and the Denver Broncos fumble the ball all over the place…

Winnipeg QB Buck Pierce practised without the metal hinge on his right knee today, instead choosing to go with a heavy tape-job that looked to be more cumbersome than the original brace. I’m going to say anywhere from 3-6 rolls of tape. Anyway, he moved around a little bit and said afterwards that he feels a lot more comfortable WITHOUT the brace. Paraphrasing, he said the most important thing is that the knee is stable.

It was back to work day for the Bombers after the bye and with the meat of the 2010 schedule staring them in the face.

Are these bye weeks longer than regular weeks, or do they just seem that way? Geesh. It feels like the Bombers haven’t played in a month. Having said that, a 2-6 record has a certain drag to it, too. Anyway, the club returns to the field Tuesday in preparation for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the annual carnival that is the Labour Day Classic. Once that day arrives, we should know a few things:

The phone rang this afternoon. Didn’t recognize the number, to be honest, and the caller didn’t identify himself.
But within two seconds we knew who was on the other end – former Bomber head coach Dave Ritchie.

Head coach Paul LaPolice held his final media scrum before heading off into the bye week today. As expected, not much meat left on the bone regarding the game in Montreal or the first eight weeks of the season to this point. Two and six is quite a conversation killer if you’re employed by the team, I guess. Here are the highlights: Protect the ball better and be mentally tougher. That about covers it.

MONTREAL – Bit of a surprise here this morning when Alouette head coach Marc Trestman announced that gifted tailback Avon Cobourne would not suit up Thursday night against the Bombers because of a bum ankle.

At practice today, WR Terence Jeffers-Harris was still in his black walking boot, a soft cast he’s been wearing since suffering an ankle injury in Calgary a couple games back. During the Paul LaPolice Show on CJOB this evening, the Bombers head coach revealed the receiver would be out another 4-5 weeks.

After starting with three contestants, the great Winnipeg Blue Bombers Kicking Derby appears to be down to two players. Ryan Elaschuk did not participate in the practice this morning, leaving Warren Kean and Justin Palardy to duke it out in gusts that caused more than a few onlookers to quickly react to their hat spinning up into the great wide open.
