The Darian Durant Rumour Timeline

  • Print

11:30 a.m. - Canad Inns Stadium
Reaction: "Did you hear about Darian Durant? Yeah, it turns out the Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback broke the thumb on his throwing hand Thursday morning. It’s true. That’s what I heard anyway. Looks like it’s Ryan Dinwiddie! Doug Berry must be thrilled!"
Analysis: This was the basic framework for any and all Durant conversation at Canad Inns Stadium Thursday morning, as word leaked about his supposed thumb injury.

11:45 a.m. - Roughriders message board
Reaction: "I feel sick. The thought of Dinwiddie starting Week 1 and 2 makes my stomach wrench."
Analysis: Football fans across the country are not immune to the occasional freak-out. And I thought it was just a Blue Bomber thing.

Noon - Text message from a friend, who happens to be a Bombers fan
Reaction: "Who breaks their thumb during non-contact drills in training camp? DINWIDDIE TIME!"
Analysis: Funny how there is a direct correlation between Blue Bomber fan happiness and Rider fan misery. And vice versa.

12:30 p.m. - Paul LaPolice media scrum
Reaction: "I just heard about it," the Bomber head coach says.
Analysis: No new information is given. Dinwiddie’s name comes up again, though.

1 p.m. - The Internet
Reaction: Word circulating around the web is that Durant is going to be fine. It wasn’t his thumb, but rather his index finger, and neither digit is broken or fractured or whatever.
Analysis: The winds pick up in Manitoba as the collective sigh from Saskatchewan continues to blow. The Riders depth chart remains the same, with Durant at No. 1.

2:11 p.m. - Regina Leader-Post
Reaction: "I think he hit the shoulder pads of one of the defensive players,'' Riders head coach Ken Miller told the LP Thursday."He lost some touch and movement for a short time. The sense of feeling is back and the range of movement is fine. He's going to be fine.''
Analysis: Clearly, there isn’t a lot of support for Ryan Dinwiddie.
