Whisper, whisper
It doesn’t take long for gossip to spread in a small loop like the Canadian Football League.
And the speculation making the rounds Wednesday night has the Edmonton Eskimos ready to name their new head coach -- perhaps as early as this Friday.
Sniffed around a bit on this tonight – a bit – and word is Winnipeg Blue Bomber defensive coordinator Kavis Reed remains the leading candidate among a group that included three Calgary Stampeder assistants, Dave Dickenson, Chris Jones and Rick Campbell as well as Buffalo Bills QB coach George Cortez.
Reed is a former Eskimo player and coach who worked with GM Eric Tillman in Saskatchewan and is highly intelligent and respected by his players.
If he leaves – and we’ve been speculating this for a long spell – former Eskimo head coach Richie Hall would be the leading candidate to replace Reed as the Bombers defensive boss.
Meanwhile, the Roughriders have asked the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for permission to speak to defensive coordinator Greg Marshall about their vacant head-coaching job. Marshall, Hall and Doug Berry and Dickenson are said to be the top contenders for Ken Miller’s old gig in Regina.
