RETIREMENT has elevated Doug Brown from the playing field to the press box.
The former defensive lineman has been added to the CJOB broadcast team for Winnipeg Blue Bombers games, the radio station announced Monday. Brown, an 11-year CFL veteran who retired earlier this off-season, joins the broadcast for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
The well-spoken Brown will serve as a colour commentator in the booth, replacing Mitch Zalnasky for all Winnipeg home games. The voice of the Bombers, CJOB sports director Bob Irving, stays in his familiar play-by-play role.
Zalnasky remains a part of the Bomber broadcast team, the station said, serving as a special analyst on all pre-game and post-game shows.
The game-day radio presence is the latest bullet point in a growing list of media work the Bomber Hall of Famer has added to his resumé. Not only does he continue to serve as a weekly columnist for the Free Press and host his weekly radio show (Doug Brown Spin Zone) on CJOB, Brown is also expected to be involved with TSN's CFL coverage throughout the season.
HELLO AND GOODBYE: The Bombers announced the signing of import offensive lineman Jordan Taormina on Monday. The 6-foot-7, 330-pound Oklahoma State-product played tackle with the Cowboys before moving on to start at guard for Everett of the Indoor Football League.
Winnipeg wasn't done tinkering with the off-season roster, releasing import quarterback Brandon Summers and non-import running back Nick FitzGibbon.
Summers spent most of the 2011 season on the practice roster, dressing for two games as the third-string quarterback. FitzGibbon joined the club in August and played in five regular-season games and in the playoffs.
GOING WEST: Free-agent receiver Aaron Hargreaves officially signed with the Edmonton Eskimos Monday.
Hargreaves caught 53 passes for 531 yards and one touchdown in four seasons with the Blue and Gold. The 26-year-old Canadian had 30 catches for 292 yards last season.
NEW LOOK: The Bombers plan to unveil a new logo and helmet design this morning. New team uniforms -- a league-wide initiative for this season -- are scheduled to be revealed next week.
