Blue consider Tibesar, Etcheverry for coaching post

TWO intriguing names have been linked to the vacant defensive co-ordinator gig with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

A CFL source said Wednesday that new Bomber head coach Mike O'Shea interviewed former Montreal Alouettes' defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar this week. And veteran assistant Gary Etcheverry, who was head coach of the Toronto Argonauts for 12 games in 2002, is also rumoured to be on the Bomber radar screen.

Tibesar was the defensive co-ordinator under Marc Trestman in Montreal and joined his former boss when he made the move to the Chicago Bears in 2013. But, following a season in which the Bears finished in the bottom of the league defensively, he was let go from his position as the linebackers coach earlier this week.

He spent one year at Purdue after leaving the Alouettes and before hooking up again with Trestman in Chicago. He also spent three years at Kansas State and, as a player, was a four-year letter winner at North Dakota, serving as a team captain in his final two seasons.

Etcheverry, 57, was most recently the head coach of the Ottawa Gee-Gees in 2012, but was fired after an 0-5 start. He served as a defensive boss with the Saskatchewan Roughriders twice, as well as with the Argos and Ottawa Renegades.

The Bombers also announced a pair of signings Wednesday:

Gabe Loper (6-2, 186, South Alabama) had 52 tackles with three interceptions as a defensive back during the 2011 and 2012 seasons at South Alabama. He also played some wide receiver during 2013.

Kenny Tate (6-4, 220, Maryland) had a five-year career with Maryland and was a first team all-ACC selection at linebacker following his junior year, when he recorded 100 tackles, 31/2 sacks and three interceptions.
