Bombers coaching job closer to being filled

  • Print

THE race for the head coaching position with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is getting more and more interesting, with it coming down to a battle between experience and upside.

Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive co-ordinator George Cortez has been told he'll receive a second interview for the position this week. Veteran CFL coach Marcel Bellefueille, the Bombers' offensive co-ordinator this past season, also believes he is still in the mix for the position.

Toronto Argonauts special teams co-ordinator Mike O'Shea is still considered the leading contender with Riders quarterbacks coach Khari Jones riding a close second.

The Bombers also made official on Monday the naming of Danny McManus as assistant GM and director of U.S. scouting. The club also hired Ted Goveia as assistant GM and director of player personnel.

Newly appointed Bombers GM Kyle Walters is aguably one of the most knowledgeable CFL executives where Canadian content is concerned but has very little experience working stateside. McManus will add balance to Walters' staff.

Walters appears to be heading towards hiring a young and ambitious staff. McManus was part of a successful management team in Hamilton but with limited opportunity for advancement behind GM Kent Austin and his top lieutenants Shawn Burke and Drew Allemang.

Goveia was with the Argonauts as director of player personnel working in U.S. and Canadian scouting. He started with the Argos as an assistant coach in 2010 and before that worked in Canadian junior and college football for 15 years in a number of capacities.
